Josef Jíra (1929–2005) Theatrum mundi

28. 6. – 29. 9. 2019 Venue Swimming Pool Temporary Exhibition Curator Zuzana Štěpanovičová

The exhibition presents the life-long painting career of Josef Jíra in a retrospective overview of all the significant types of his art (landscapes, figure painting, psychologically motivated portraiture...). With hindsight, we can more relevantly appreciate the work of an artist who became a spokesman for his generation in the 1950s and 1960s; a “tolerated rebel” who stood against the regime in the 1970s and 1980s, and the painter who turned to his roots in the 1990s. The exhibition also reflects on various cultural activities, some of which were truly exceptional in their time; and the social influence of Josef Jíra is shown in photographs.

Diary of Josef Jíra 1970/1971, with a foreword by Bohumil Hrabal, in published on the occasion of the exhibition as a tribute to their friendship, which lasted several decades.
