Until 2018, the work of the greatest Czech representative of geometric abstraction and fine art in general, Zdeněk Sýkora (1920–2011), was not represented in the Liberec Regional Gallery’s collections. Thanks to the acquisition funds of the Czech Ministry of Culture, several significant large-scale prints, representing all the important periods in Sýkora’s long creative life, have been obtained. Due to this exceptional opportunity, we have decided to prepare an exhibition of geometric abstractions from the collections of the Liberec Regional Gallery in order to show what an excellent contribution the recently acquired set of Sýkora’s prints is.

The collection of geometric abstractions was put together primarily from the gallery’s acquisitions of the 1990s; the set of a few individual pieces included in the collections was significantly expanded through these acquisitions. The Liberec collection contains pieces by all the important artists of this style, from its radical representatives, Jan Kubíček and Zdeněk Sýkora, through an artist touching on pop-art, Ladislav Mirvald, to the sculptor and graphic artist working with movement, Radek Kratina. But the collection offers many more famous and lesser-known names. The exhibition provides an overview of this artistic style, which has no strict definition and has acquired many shapes throughout its existence, lasting to this day. The Liberec Regional Gallery’s collection of geometric abstractions has never been presented on this scale before.
